Charleston Noisette Memorial Garden
This garden was dedicated in 1975 to John Champneys (Dec.28,
1743 - 1820) and Philippe Stanislaus Noisette, creators of the
Noisette Roses.. Noisette was born in pre-revolutionary France
where his family had contact with the French aristocracy. He
died in 1835. John Champneys was a Charleston rice grower and
plantation owner who, in turn crossed Parson's Pink Rose China
with Rosa Moschata, a White Musk, to produce in 1811 the first
hybridized rose in America. Philippe Noisette, a local nurseryman,
and his brother Louis of Paris, France, propagated and crossed
seedlings of Champney's Pink Cluster with other roses of the
time to develop the class of roses known as the Noisettes. |
